Mailbag: Knee Pain Solution STOPS the “OUCH!”

My joints, especially my knees, have been hurting more. What can I do? It’s keeping me from moving a lot.

– Barbara

Hi Barbara,

It may seem counterintuitive, but carefully chosen exercise could be precisely “what the doctor ordered” to soothe chronic knee pain.

Studies show the right activities can EASE the ache, allowing you to reclaim your active lifestyle. I’m talking about gentle, low-impact movements tailored to your body’s needs.

I often advise folks who are battling knee pain to consider water exercise. Being in water takes the pressure off your joints, while its warmth and resistance soothe and strengthen the tissues and muscles surrounding the affected knee.

You can try aqua aerobics, paddle leisurely laps, or simply walk the pool perimeter and feel the spring return to your step.

If swimming isn’t an option, gently pedaling a stationary bike is another excellent choice for folks with knee pain. The smooth, circular motion mobilizes without jostling tender spots.

You can gradually add other gentle movements to the mix, such as stretches to enhance flexibility, no-impact weight training to support joints, and mind-body practices like yoga or Tai Chi to unite movement with mental focus.

The goal is to STIMULATE the tissues and muscles around problem areas—this will provide more stability and act as shock absorbers to stop the “ouch.”

I always advise folks to tune into their body when exercising to avoid overdoing it… especially when starting. Some increased soreness is expected, but joint PAIN signals it’s time to pull back.

Certain supplements can also help dial down pain and support stronger knee joints:

  • Glucosamine: This nutrient is a building block for cartilage and synovial fluid. It reduces swelling and supports stronger joints. Studies show glucosamine eases osteoarthritis pain.
  • Chondroitin: This nutrient is found naturally in cartilage. It allows the connective tissue to stay flexible and strong. Chondroitin is often paired with glucosamine in a single supplement. Some studies show it keeps cartilage from breaking down too quickly.
  • Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM): MSM provides bones, muscles, tendons, and joints with bioavailable sulfur to build collagen and glucosamine. Plus, it reduces inflammation and eases pain.
  • Curcumin: This potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant nutrient is the active ingredient in the golden-yellow spice turmeric. Studies show it eases joint pain.
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Seaweed, fish oil, and some nuts and seeds contain anti-inflammatory omega-3s. Research finds these fatty acids can reduce joint inflammation, easing pain.
  • Boswellia: This Ayurvedic herb contains pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory boswellic acids to make joints more flexible, reducing stiffness.
  • Collagen: Collagen peptides ease joint pain by helping to build new bone, cartilage, joint tissues, and skin.
