Mailbag! STOP Dizziness and Improve Hearing

I live with Meniere’s disease and the dizziness is about to drive me crazy. Do you have any recommendations for how to make it better?

–Bert from Detroit, MI

For readers who don’t know, Meniere’s disease is a disorder of the inner ear. People who have this condition complain of severe dizziness, vertigo, ringing in the ears, and hearing loss. They often say they have a feeling of “fullness” or congestion in their ear.

And it’s that congestion that should be the focus of treatment.

I find there are lots of triggers for Meniere’s, such as tobacco, alcohol, feeling stressed, and not getting enough sleep. Do your best to reduce these as much as possible.

Believe it or not, just getting enough good sleep helps many people. If you need help with sleep, consider taking calming herbs, like valerian, hops, chamomile, and others. Some of my patients have found that melatonin also works well.

The congestion can come from a lot of places, but often it’s your diet.

I recommend reducing inflammation, which means avoiding ALL seed oils (canola, sunflower, safflower), as well as dairy and sugar. This also means staying away from processed foods.

Changing your diet can be very difficult, but try going without eating out at a restaurant or eating anything that comes in a package for two weeks. This is enough time to tell if a diet change will work for you.

Your inner ear is very sensitive and needs certain nutrients to work well. Consider trying some of the following:

· CoQ10. Coenzyme Q10 is an antioxidant that has been shown to slow or reverse ear damage.

· Omega-3 fatty acids. DHA found in fish oil is an omega-3 fatty acid. Brain cells (which receive sound) are made up of healthy fats like the omega-3 fatty acids.

· Ginkgo biloba. This herb is typically used for brain health, but it increases microcirculation (the growth of small blood vessels), which can also be helpful for hearing.

· Berries. I’m a big fan of berries because they contain many powerful antioxidant compounds. Berries are high in essential vitamins and flavonoids that your ears need.

· Get rid of wax. It is astonishing how many people can’t hear well because of ear wax. Have a professional look inside your ears and have them cleaned out if you need it.
