Mailbag: Supplement Solutions for Arthritis and Tissue Support

Do supplements really work? If they do, which ones would you suggest for arthritis? Connective tissue disease?

The answer to your question, do supplements work is a resounding “Yes!”

In fact, depending on the condition, they often perform BETTER than drugs.

However, not all supplements are created equal. While some have solid scientific backing, others offer little more than expensive urine at the end of the day.

Supplement effectiveness can vary widely, depending on factors like quality, dosage, and your individual health needs.

Having said that, here is what I find helpful for arthritis:

  • Glucosamine and Chondroitin: These two are often the go-to for joint health. Some studies show they can reduce pain and slow cartilage breakdown in osteoarthritis.
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: These healthy fats, found in fish oil, have potent anti-inflammatory properties. Research suggests they can reduce joint pain and stiffness in rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Turmeric (Curcumin): This golden spice is a potent anti-inflammatory. One study found it as effective as ibuprofen for knee osteoarthritis pain.
  • Boswellia: Also known as Indian frankincense, this herb has shown promise in reducing arthritis pain and improving physical function.

And these are what I typically recommend to my patients for connective tissue disease:

  • Vitamin D: Low levels of this crucial vitamin are common in autoimmune conditions. Supplementation may help manage symptoms and reduce inflammation.
  • Collagen: Studies suggest collagen supplements can improve skin elasticity and joint health in some connective tissue disorders.
  • N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC): This antioxidant may help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress associated with some connective tissue diseases.
  • Probiotics: Emerging research suggests that a healthy gut microbiome may play a role in managing autoimmune conditions.

Most importantly, always consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new supplement regimen, especially if you have a chronic condition like arthritis or connective tissue disease or are taking medications to treat them.

P.S. The hidden threat behind your achy joints.
