Mailbag: The "Natural Navigator" Method for Finding Your Perfect Doctor

I would like to know what questions are the best to ask when looking for a new naturopathic practitioner?

How do I find the best naturopathic endocrinologist for my needs?

Is it OK to see your naturopath virtually?”

—Natural Navigator

Hi Navigator,

You’re asking some brilliant questions about finding the right naturopath (or, really, any doctor).

When I first started practicing, there were only about 1,000 licensed naturopathic doctors in the entire country. And just two schools were training them.

We’ve grown significantly since then. However, it’s still a relatively small profession, which can make finding specialists challenging.

Here are key questions to ask your potential new naturopathic doctor:

About their training:

  • Where did they receive their naturopathic medical degree?
  • Are they licensed in your state?
  • What post-graduate training do they have?
  • Do they have specific experience with endocrine conditions?

About their practice:

  • What’s their treatment philosophy?
  • Do they work with conventional doctors when needed?
  • What lab testing do they use?
  • How do they stay current with research?

About logistics:

  • What are their fees?
  • Do they offer payment plans?
  • How available are they between visits?
  • What’s their typical treatment timeline?

Virtual visits with a naturopathic doctor can be very effective. However, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Initial visits are often better in person (if possible)
  • Some states have specific rules about virtual care
  • Certain treatments or tests may require in-person visits

To find a naturopath specializing in endocrinology:

  • Check the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians website
  • Look for someone who regularly posts or speaks about endocrine issues
  • Ask about their experience with your specific condition
  • Consider virtual visits to expand your geographic options

However, keep in mind with how few naturopaths specialize in endocrinology, you might need to work with a general naturopath with endocrine experience and be willing to travel for initial consultations

Remember, finding the right practitioner is like finding a good partner—it’s worth taking time to find the right fit!
