Mailbag! The REAL Reason You Can’t Lose Weight

Do you have any tips for weight loss? I’m exercising and eating less, but I’m not getting the results I want.

–Lori from Salt Lake City, UT

*********

It’s absolutely frustrating when you can’t lose the weight you want to lose… especially when you’re really putting in the effort!

I’m glad to hear that you’re exercising and eating less, but if you’re not eating less of the right foods and not exercising the right way, you’re not going to get the results you want.

You see, mainstream medicine preaches that a calorie is a calorie and any exercise is good… but that’s not the whole truth.

First, let’s take a look at calorie-counting.

You see, calorie-counting doesn’t work for one major reason: weight loss isn’t just about total calories, but more about WHICH calories you consume.

In fact, calories have no relationship to what gets stored as fat.

Let me repeat: identical calorie meals can have dramatically different fat-storage outcomes. So, if you eat 1,000 calories of protein or 1,000 calories of sugar, the sugar will pack on the pounds.

Your body absorbs carbohydrates like sugar differently than proteins or fats… regardless of calories.

And that’s the main takeaway when it comes to your diet. The calories you’re eating should come from low-sugar foods, like lean proteins and non-starchy vegetables.

Now let’s talk about exercise.

One of the biggest mainstream myths out there is that you can exercise your way to being skinny… but this has been debunked in numerous studies over the years.

Your focus for exercise should also not have anything to do with burning calories – instead, focus on building muscle. That’s because nothing will burn more of the fat off your body than muscle. Muscle mass makes up about 60 percent of your total metabolism, which means the more muscle mass you have, the higher your metabolism.

I’m not talking about becoming Superwoman, but just doing some weight-lifting exercises that increase the large muscles in your legs and arms. If you’re puzzled about how to get started, find a trainer who can help you.

Eating a low-sugar diet and building muscle can jumpstart your weight loss. You’ve got the ability, you just need the right tools.
