Hi Diane,
The short answer to your question is NO.
Stevia is NOT as bad as the alternative artificial sweeteners.
Regular Living Daily readers already know how I feel about ARTIFICIAL sweeteners. (Hint: I HATE them!)
Many fake sugars on the market harm your health, and you should avoid them like the plague. (See my P.S. below for MORE on their disturbing effects.)
But stevia is different. It’s a NATURAL plant that tastes sweet.
The suits at Coke and Pepsi pressured the FDA to approve stevia years ago. The FDA green-lighted a stevia extract (a glycoside) called rebaudioside A (Reb-A).
Studies show that rebaudioside A (and other glycosides in Stevia) aren’t harmful.
Research also shows that the whole Stevia plant can help make insulin work better. And that, of course, means it could help people manage diseases like diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
Stevia has been used for hundreds of years without any significant side effects surfacing. So, it’s likely safe to use if you don’t go overboard.
But there is one thing to remember that often goes overlooked in these kinds of discussions.
Stevia is very sweet. So, if you’re trying to give up sugar, it will keep you addicted to sweet things.
If you wean yourself OFF the sweet stuff, you’ll find you eventually stop craving it. Sweetened foods will taste TOO sweet. And you’ll discover more subtle flavors in your foods that were covered up before.
