MAILBAG: The TRUTH About the Flu Shot

I’m nervous about catching the flu. Especially with the new COVID variant around. What can I do to avoid getting sick? What do you think about the flu shot?

Hi Emilia,

Giving the flu shot a thumbs up or thumbs down isn’t as straightforward as it might sound.

There are valid arguments on both sides of the divide. And several factors to consider.

First, the flu vaccine could have a better long-term track record.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) points out that studies show the vaccine can reduce the risk of flu by between 40 and 60 percent, depending on the strain and the year.

But the unspoken part of that reality is that there are some years when the vaccine is a near-total miss. (It’s been as low as 14 percent effective.)

Plus, it’s important to remember that it tends to be less effective in seniors than other folks.

On the other hand, similar to the COVID-19 vaccine, the flu shot reduces the risk of the kind of severe infections that send people to the hospital (including those older adults). And that ALONE may be reason enough for some folks to get one.

So, when deciding whether to get the shot, I’d ask myself a few questions.

  • Do I live in a crowded area, like a city?
  • How healthy am I?
  • Am I willing to wear a mask?

Here’s what I’ve advised others who have had similar concerns…

If you’re constantly bumping into people where you live, you SHOULD get the flu vaccine.

If you live in a rural location far from other folks, you’re willing to wear a mask when you go to the store or into town, no one around you is doing risky things, and you’re healthy, then maybe you can SKIP it.

And, finally, if you have any chronic condition such as heart disease, diabetes, or cancer… or take immunosuppressing medications… you SHOULD get the flu shot.

But as with any health decision, these are only suggestions. I also advise folks to talk with their own doctor about what’s best for them.

When flu cases surge in your area the following flu-fighting “immunity cocktail” could be helpful as well…

  • Vitamin D (3,000-5,000 IUs daily)
  • Berberine, Turmeric, and Olive Leaf
  • Probiotic/Polyphenols (I take my probiotic in a super-food blend)

This combo could provide extra protection when you need it most.
