Mailbag: Tips to Support Someone with Dementia
“My mom is in a home and declining with dementia. Is there anything I can do to make her comfortable or make things easier?”
-Beth
Hi Beth,
I certainly sympathize with your situation. It can be difficult to figure out how to help when you’re not directly involved in a declining parent’s care.
But even when you’re not a primary caregiver, there are some thoughtful things you can do to help a parent in a nursing home feel loved, supported, and safe:
- Check in regularly with whoever cares for your parent. Ask them to suggest anything they think will be helpful, such as comfort items, care products, and activities.
- When you visit your mom, focus on connecting with her by engaging in activities she enjoys, interacting positively, and showing affection. Avoid correcting her too much.
- Educate yourself on dementia, caregiving techniques, and communicating with empathy so you can understand what your parent’s experience is like and offer the proper support.
- Share family photos, videos, or music that can spark positive memories.
When a parent develops dementia, it’s difficult for the children regardless of their age. So, it’s essential to take care of YOURSELF as well. I suggest joining a support group for families affected by dementia.
While more research is needed, there are some promising brain-supporting supplements you may want to consider:
- Vitamin E is an antioxidant that protects cells. Some studies suggest the vitamin may slow decline in people with moderate to severe Alzheimer’s disease.
- Ginkgo biloba increases blood flow to the brain. In some cases, the herb may improve cognitive function and memory in dementia patients.
- Omega-3s are powerful fatty acids in fish oil, nuts, and seeds. Omega-3s are natural inflammation fighters, and DHA specifically could offer some protection for brain cells.
- CoQ10 is an antioxidant that’s sometimes runs low in the brains of people with dementia. Supplementing with the nutrient may benefit cognitive function, especially when combined with vitamin E.
- Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin involved in cell metabolism and nerve function. In folks with low B12 levels or outright deficiencies, supplements could protect against brain atrophy and cognitive decline.
Consult with your parent’s doctor to determine if any of these supplements are appropriate to try.
