Mailbag: Triggers for Troubling Bathroom Changes

I’ve noticed some changes in my bathroom habits, including constipation and occasional incontinence. Could these be signs of something serious?

– Walter

Hi Walter,

Digestion complaints such as constipation and occasional incontinence can be uncomfortable and concerning, but they don’t always indicate a major problem.

While both occurring at the same time could be a sign of something more serious, it’s not very likely.

When my patients come to me with similar digestion concerns, I explain that there are MANY potential causes for these issues, ranging from simple lifestyle factors to more complex medical conditions.

Some common culprits include…

  • dehydration,
  • a low-fiber diet,
  • certain medications,
  • and even stress.

In some cases, though, these digestion symptoms could point to conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), or colorectal cancer.

So, I advise my patients to look out for more alarming symptoms like severe pain, blood in the stool, or unexplained weight loss and to track their symptoms.

I recommend they make note of any patterns or triggers and schedule another appointment if their symptoms continue.

A primary care physician or gastroenterologist can help you determine what’s causing these changes in your bathroom habits and recommend the best approach to resolving your digestion symptoms, whether dietary adjustments, medications, or further testing.
