Mailbag: Unsteady on Your Feet? Now What?
“I’ve been having trouble with my balance lately and have fallen a couple of times. Could this be related to osteoporosis or another underlying cause?”
– John
Hi John,
It’s always concerning when someone experiences balance issues or falls.
While osteoporosis can contribute to an increased risk of falling, several other underlying causes should also be considered.
Osteoporosis is a condition that causes bones to become weak and brittle, making them more susceptible to fractures.
While the condition doesn’t directly cause balance problems, it can lead to changes in posture and gait, which may affect balance.
Additionally, if you’ve had fractures due to osteoporosis, the pain and limited mobility associated with these injuries can impact your balance.
However, other factors that can cause balance issues as well, including:
- Inner ear disorders, such as vertigo or labyrinthitis
- Neurological conditions like Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis
- Medications that cause dizziness or drowsiness as a side effect
- Vision problems
- Muscle weakness or joint stiffness
- Peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage in the feet or legs)
- Dehydration or low blood pressure
I always encourage anyone experiencing falls to consult with their doctor to determine the underlying cause of their balance problems. They may recommend tests or refer you to a specialist to help diagnose the issue and develop an appropriate treatment plan.
In the meantime, I typically advise my own patients to take extra precautions to prevent falls, such as using assistive devices (such as a cane or walker), improving lighting in your home, and removing tripping hazards (such as scatter rugs and cords).
P.S. Frailty raises your risk of falls, broken bones, disability, hospitalization, and death. It’s a recipe for a shorter, more painful life. CLICK for the surprising fix.
