Mailbag: Why Am I DIZZY When I Stand Up?

My wife has had some dizziness when standing up quickly. Should she be concerned? A friend suggested it could be related to her blood pressure medication?

– Frank

(Article continues below.)

Hi Frank,

Low blood pressure when standing after sitting or lying down is called orthostatic or postural hypotension. Typically, someone will feel dizzy or lightheaded when this happens.

Some high blood pressure drugs, including diuretics and beta blockers, can cause this kind of low blood pressure when you stand up quickly, triggering dizziness.

Dehydration is the next most common reason for feeling lightheaded or unsteady on your feet. When you don’t drink enough water, your blood pressure can rapidly drop when you stand up.

However, those aren’t the only causes of dizziness. Other rarer triggers for that woozy feeling include…

  • Long-term inactivity: Spending a lot of time in bed or sitting can cause changes that make it harder for your body to adjust to fluctuations in blood pressure.
  • Autonomic neuropathy: The autonomic nervous system controls processes like blood pressure. If it gets damaged, it can make it hard for blood pressure to stay in a healthy range. Diabetes and Parkinson’s disease are two common causes of this.
  • Nervous system disorders: Multiple system atrophy and pure autonomic failure are two conditions that can mess with the nerve messages that help control blood pressure, leading to dizziness.
  • Endocrine disorders: Problems with the thyroid, adrenal failure, and hormones can cause blood pressure to drop.

If anyone ever experiences unexplained dizziness it’s always a good idea to consult a doctor.

The fix could be as simple as adjusting a medication. And it’s an opportunity to catch any other potential causes early.

P.S. Doctors typically treat hypertension with drugs. But this BELLY secret could dial down your blood pressure NATURALLY.
