“Mediterranean Flower” BOOSTS Your Heart and Brain?!

Dear Reader,

One of the fundamental problems with mainstream medicine is how compartmentalized it has become.

You have a doctor for your heart you have another doctor for your brain you have a doctor for your big left toe

The sad result is that mainstream medicine rarely pulls itself backwards to see that everything’s connected.

And a recent study shows just how harmful this medical model is.

Because by not seeing the whole picture… you miss out on treatments that can benefit more than just ONE part of your help.

Take your heart and brain for example. There’s a “Mediterranean flower” solution that can benefit both your brain AND your heart… but if you leave it to mainstream medicine, you might miss out on it altogether.

*****

I’m talking about capers.

Yes, those little flowery buds that come from the caper bush (which usually grows in the Mediterranean).

We eat them pickled and use as a garnish on everything from salmon to cream cheese bagels

But what makes them so great for your heart and brain?

Those salty green capers are rich with a compound called quercetin and the pickling process seems to INCREASE the amount of quercetin – so says a new study published in the journal Communications Biology.

The research found that quercetin modulates a specific type of ion channel in the body called KCNQ channel.

The KCNQ channel is found in specific proteins on cell membranes which allows electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and calcium to travel in and out of the cell

Sounds like no big deal, but quercetin enhances KCNQ channels which sense electricity and thus helps potassium transport across the cell membrane. And that is great for BOTH your brain and heart health.

But if capers aren’t your thing, quercetin can be found in a diverse amount of foods including red wine, onions, green tea, ginkgo biloba and St John’s wort

I think one of the best ways to get quercetin is to supplement – that insures you are getting enough.

But let’s take a few more steps to make your heart and brain happy.

Dr. Scott’s Heart and Brain Program:

  • Exercise: Exercise not only reduces inflammation but is great for the heart (and the brain). You don’t have to be too crazy, just get out and move your body around some every day.
  • Eat Colorful Foods: This means getting enough vegetables in your diet. If you can’t stand veggies, you can “cheat” by getting your veggies and other superfoods in a powered form. I take one every day by mixing it into yogurt and some berries.
  • Avoid Vegetable Oils: Vegetable oils, especially trans fatty acids, are like setting off tiny bombs in your blood stream which increase inflammation.
  • Fish Oil: One of the most powerful anti-inflammatories is fish oil. It works inside your body to keep inflammatory proteins low.
  • Curcumin: This extract from turmeric is great at helping the body modulate inflammation. Unless you get a ton of this in your food, you should think about supplementing.
