Mysterious Therapy FREEZES OUT Multiple Sclerosis Symptoms
Dear Living Well Daily Reader,
Have you ever felt bored?
Suddenly, you find yourself mindlessly snacking on candy or chips, and plopped down in front of the TV watching too many shows…
Before you know it, time has completely gotten away from you. Maybe you even missed an important appointment!
Funnily enough, your immune system can also act the same way… especially if you have multiple sclerosis (MS).
When your immune system is healthy, it only focuses on defending you from invading viruses and bacteria. Because it’s keeping you safe, it doesn’t have TIME to cause trouble.
But when it gets bored, it uses pent-up energy to ATTACK… and soon, your overactive immune system is causing MS flare-ups.
Now, new research has revealed a mysterious therapy that could FREEZE OUT multiple sclerosis symptoms… AND keep your bored immune system occupied!
The answer is cold therapy.
Cold therapy comes in many forms. Some people sit in ice cold water for five to ten minutes, while others take cold showers or spend more time out in the cold.
Though it may sound punishing, the payoff is worth it… especially if you have an autoimmune disease like MS.
Cold therapy starts with an idea called the “Life History Theory.” It suggests that when an organism (that includes us!) is comfortable, safe, and has enough food, it doesn’t have enough tasks to focus on, so it hones in on one process to the nth degree.
This means, if you have an autoimmune disorder, your body has become too comfortable, and it needs a challenge (like warming itself up) to take its obsessive focus off of your immune system.
In a new study, researchers took exposed mice with a version of MS and exposed them to cold rooms.
At the end of the study, the researchers found that demyelination of nerve cells, a key indicator of MS, decreased. Demyelination is when the protective covering around the nerve cells begin to disintegrate, leading to symptoms like forgetfulness and loss of motor skills.
Essentially, the cold therapy had calmed down the mice’s overactive immune systems.
And there are a few simple ways to do this yourself. Try turning down the thermostat in your house, going for walks when it’s cold outside, or taking a cold shower or bath.
