Nighttime Threat DOUBLES Dementia Risk!?
Dear Living Well Daily Reader,
Often when we see something terrible happen, whether it’s on the news or to someone we know, we think, “That will never happen to me… I’m much more careful.”
And it’s easy to fall into that pattern with health concerns as you age. You never think cancer or falls will happen to you.
But the problem is, when it comes to dementia, NO ONE is safe. It could happen to you.
There’s a secret nighttime threat that can more than DOUBLE your chances of dementia… and it’s MUCH more common than you think.
A recent study presented at the American Academy of Neurology’s 73rd Annual Meeting found that sleep apnea could ramp up your chances of dementia.
Obstructive sleep apnea is a condition where people stop breathing for brief periods during the night.
In the study, researchers interviewed almost 70 seniors about their thinking and memory abilities and mood and sleep quality. Then, they had the seniors take a 30-point exam to test their cognitive abilities.
At the end they found that 52% of these seniors had sleep apnea.
Even worse? Those with the condition were 60 percent more likely to do poorly on the test.
Everybody snores sometimes. But obstructive sleep apnea is different. If you snore loudly and your spouse notices that you sometimes stop breathing or gasp for air, you could have sleep apnea.
Obstructive sleep apnea is associated with higher blood pressure, risk of stroke, risk of heart attack, and developing type 2 diabetes. It’s even been shown in another recent study to raise the risk of cancer in women.
And it can be deadly.
The cure for sleep apnea is to maintain a healthy weight and to exercise (to bring in more oxygen).
A CPAP machine is often a good choice for people with severe disease. But only a sleep specialist can know for sure if this is right for you. You can set up an appointment with a sleep specialist through your primary doctor.
P.S. There’s another secret cause destroying your memory and your brain—vitamin deficiency. Find out exactly what you’re missing right here and reinforce your memory today.
