Probiotics 101: How to pick the right supplement

Hi George,
There are actually two areas you should focus on when it comes to picking out a probiotic.
The first area is supplement QUALITY.
The truth is not all supplement manufacturers produce good products. That means you have to be careful about which one you pick.
- Purchase only from companies you recognize or have a reputation you feel confident about.
- Look for a probiotic with live cultures.
- Pick a product with at least 1 billion colony-forming units (CFUs) but preferably over 10 billion CFUs (the more, the better).
- Look for a supplement with a variety of probiotic strains.
The second area is DELIVERY.
Your stomach doesn’t need probiotics. It’s the small intestines following your stomach that do. And more specifically, your colon that requires them the most.
But it’s a long journey down your digestive tract to your colon (up to 21 feet). So the way to make sure the probiotics are reaching their destination is to:
- Either pick a supplement with enough CFUs (preferably over 10 billion).
- Or choose a delayed-release capsule that will open further down your digestive tract.
Focus on these two areas, and you should be able to easily find a probiotic that does the job effectively and works for you.
