Slash Your Risk for THIS Painful Diabetic Nerve Condition

Diabetes is HARD on seniors.

Sure, younger people can also develop diabetes-linked kidney disease, heart disease, or even brain problems.

But when you mix high blood sugar with advanced age, all those conditions tend to progress faster and become more severe.

Case in point: peripheral neuropathy.

Peripheral neuropathy occurs when blood sugar levels rise and damage nerves throughout the body. This painful condition is far more common in seniors over 65, and your risk RISES with age.

But new research may have just revealed a simple, NATURAL way to slash your risk.

You first notice peripheral neuropathy as a tingling in your fingers and toes. But that tingling soon turns into numbness and pain.

Eventually, muscle weakness can occur. Resulting in difficulty picking up objects or even walking.

But the nerve damage doesn’t stop there. Poorly functioning nerves ALSO cause problems with digestion, going to the bathroom, and even blood circulation.

Recently, researchers from the Salk Institute discovered there may be a  hidden trigger for this type of nerve damage.

The study published in the journal Nature revealed that mice with low levels of the amino acids serine and glycine were at higher risk for peripheral neuropathy.

We don’t discuss these two amino acids much because our bodies can make them. That means they’re considered “non-essential” amino acids.

But this study shows that even though our bodies can make something, that doesn’t mean we don’t need it.

When the researchers gave the mice serine supplements, they found the amino acid DRAMATICALLY cut the critter’s risk of peripheral neuropathy. The team believes the supplemental serine may also help with other complications of poor blood sugar control.

This was an animal study, so more research is needed, of course. But there’s no reason to wait around for those results. Lucky for us, boosting serine couldn’t be easier.

You can raise your serine levels by eating more…

  • nuts (peanuts, almonds, and walnuts)
  • eggs
  • meat
  • fish
  • fermented soy (tempeh, gochujang, and natto)
  • chickpeas
  • lentils

Keeping your blood sugar under control is the best way to reduce your risk of developing peripheral neuropathy. But dialing down your risk even further by eating more serine-rich foods is a no-brainer.
