South Pacific Tribal Remedy SOOTHES Pain

Dear Living Well Daily Reader,

Folks living with chronic pain, too often, measure their lives in doses.

If you’re one of those, you know what I mean.

How often have you thought, just a few more hours till my next dose… I can make it!

Taking over the counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen or naproxen sodium leave you chained to the clock.

Or worse, maybe you’re suffering in silence because you’re worried about the addictive properties of opioids (and rightfully so).

Thankfully, there’s a brand-new, NATURAL solution in the works.

Researchers have discovered that this ancient South Pacific tribal remedy can SOOTHE pain.

And the results are astounding…

For thousands of years, the Samoan people have been using the leaves of a special tree to treat a wide variety of conditions, including pain.

The small tree, called Psychotria insularum but more commonly known as matalafi, only grows about six feet tall… but its healing powers are near-miraculous.

The traditional use of matalafi focused mostly on wounds and injuries. It was used similar to the way we use aspirin or ibuprofen.

That got Dr. Seeseei Molimau-Samasoni, senior research director at the Scientific Research Organization of Samoa, to wonder if the tree could act like other anti-inflammatories.

Dr. Molimau-Samasoni’s research appeared in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. She and her colleagues found the matalafi tree was every bit as effective as ibuprofen at reducing inflammation.

But the tree works in a way that no one thought (and different from every other anti-inflammatory).

When Dr. Molimau-Samasoni’s team tested matalafi in animal cells, they found that it could chelate iron. Chelation occurs when a molecule attaches to a mineral.

So why is this important?

Well, iron is actually an essential part of inflammation.

During inflammation, iron metabolism changes. Iron increases so-called reactive oxygen species (ROS) which create oxidative damage. These ROS are used to help destroy foreign invaders in your body, but they can also damage your own healthy cells (which is why long-term inflammation is bad for you).

But when matalafi chelates iron, it REDUCES inflammation by also reducing ROS.

Much more research needs to take place before matalafi will be available alongside NSAIDs and supplements, but hope is on the horizon for an anti-inflammatory that works as well as common over-the-counter drugs… without all the side effects.

In the meantime, try an already proven (and available) natural anti-inflammatory like white willow bark. Start with around 240mg daily and increase the dosage under your doctor’s supervision.

P.S. If you suffer from both chronic pain and chronic fatigue, you need to see this. Researchers have uncovered a way to ZAP AWAY your pain and tiredness in one simple step.
