Stuck at Home? Watch Those Naps…

If you’re like most folks, you’ve spent most of the past few weeks cooped up in the house.

And with nothing to do, it can be easy to just stretch out on the couch and catch a nap.

But if daytime naps are a regular thing for you… if you’re just exhausted from sunup to sundown… you need to be careful.

A new study has linked daytime sleepiness to some pretty serious health problems.

But there’s one important catch they forgot to mention.

Hypersomnolence is a medical condition defined by excessive daytime sleepiness – even after sleeping seven or more hours at night.

Now, this is different from fatigue – or feeling tired and run down (although it can be tricky to tell them apart).

While hypersomnolence can happen to anyone, it especially happens to the elderly and can be a sign that they have diabetes, high blood pressure, or cancer.

In a new study, published in the journal of the American Academy of Neurology, researchers found that people who reported daytime sleepiness had a 2.3 times greater risk of developing diabetes or high blood pressure in the next three years.

They were also twice as likely to develop cancer or heart disease.

So, if you struggle with staying awake during the day (even after sleeping seven or more hours), it is time to check in with your doctor and have a checkup.

But it’s also time to check your medicine cabinet, too. MANY drugs make you feel tired, including:

  • High blood pressure drugs
  • Antidepressants
  • Antihistamines
  • Drugs for nausea and vomiting
  • Any drug for anxiety or insomnia
  • Drugs for Parkinson’s disease
  • Muscle relaxants

When you are at your doctor’s office, ask if any drugs you are on might be causing your symptoms, too.
