
The EXACT Age to Get Serious About Your Health
An old friend recently asked me at what age he should get serious about his health because he still felt good.
I told him: “Buddy, that’s great that you’re feeling so good! But here’s the thing. There’s no “right age” to start caring about your health.”
The best time is always NOW. And that’s no matter how old you are or how good you feel.
But there’s a reason WHY so many of us don’t. And when you know it, you can avoid it.
Scientists who study longevity talk about something called future time perspective or FTP.
In this case, FTP boils down to the fact that when we think we’ve got loads of time ahead, it’s easy to ignore stuff like a few extra pounds or skipping check-ups.
We figure we’ll deal with it “someday,” but someday never comes.
This is the same mistake many folks who smoke make. They think, “ah, I’ll just quit tomorrow,” and when tomorrow turns into today, they once again think, “Oh, never mind, I’ll quit tomorrow.” And the cycle repeats.
But just being aware of this phenomenon is half the battle.
Because here’s the truth. Taking care of yourself now can help keep you feeling good for the long haul.
So, your first move is to get your doctor to check your blood pressure, blood sugar, and long-term inflammation (C-reactive protein levels). If all of those are normal, you’re probably doing well.
But don’t freak out if some numbers aren’t perfect. The point is to know where you stand so you can break through the FTP problem and make smart choices.
Now, when setting out to make healthy changes, I suggest you focus on the basics. You don’t need to transform into a gym rat or live off kale smoothies.
Start small:
- Add an extra serving of veggies to your meals, or swap out soda for water.
- Find something you enjoy for exercise—maybe a brisk walk after dinner or joining a local sports team.
- Aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep a night. Your body does its repair work while you sleep, so getting enough of it is critical.
These kinds of small changes can make a big difference over time. The key is consistency, not perfection.
Remember, it’s not about overhauling your entire life overnight. It’s about making smart, sustainable choices that’ll keep you feeling young and vibrant for many more years to come.
