The Strange Smile Link to Healthy Aging
I often write about oral health. And there’s a good reason for that.
No, it’s not that I’m obsessed with everyone having a perfectly shiny set of pearly whites.
I focus on oral care for an entirely DIFFERENT reason.
It’s because what goes on in your mouth has a surprisingly large impact on your overall health.
Including one aspect you’d NEVER guess…
Good oral health and hygiene… taking proper care of your teeth and gums… slashes inflammation levels.
And research links those lower inflammation levels to a reduced risk of…
- pneumonia
- heart disease
- diabetes complications,
- and Alzheimer’s.
Those are all excellent reasons to keep up with your brushing and flossing. But science has just added another one to the list…. HAPPINESS.
New research reveals that oral health is closely linked to overall health and wellbeing as we age.
In a study, poor oral health was associated with social isolation, depression, and reduced quality of life in older adults.
As we get older, issues like tooth loss, dry mouth, root decay, and gum disease become more common. And these oral health problems can greatly impact your ability to eat, speak properly, smile, and engage with others.
On the other hand, keeping your mouth healthy with brushing, flossing, regular dental visits, and prompt treatment of any issues provides real-world benefits.
Good oral care …
- preserves your natural teeth and reduces inflammation,
- allows you to enjoy a variety of the tasty, nutritious foods that are essential fuel for continuing to enjoy an active, fulfilled life, and
- makes communicating, expressing emotions, and participating socially without embarrassment possible.
The bottom line is your oral health has a profound impact on your health AND happiness. So be sure to brush, floss, and protect your smile well into your golden years.
P.S. Discover how neglecting your teeth could be DEADLY!
