Upgrade from Bananas and Apples to These Powerhouse Fruits
I’m often asked which fruits are the best. So, let’s talk about it.
I’ll cut right to the chase: berries win this contest hands down.
If you’re limiting your options to apples and bananas, you’re missing out on a universe of superior antioxidant power.
Those everyday fruits are like bringing a knife to a gunfight compared to their vibrant berry cousins.
Why are berries the undisputed champions? They’re low in sugar (unlike those sweet bananas you love) and bursting with antioxidants.
These potent compounds fight nasty free radicals—the troublemakers behind inflammation and nearly every chronic disease you’d want to avoid.
Blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries—they’re all antioxidant-packed powerhouses, and their deep purple, red, and blue hues prove it.
Studies show that eating all kinds of berries is a “plausible and potentially useful dietary strategy to reduce risk of cancer.” That’s not just my opinion—it’s science.
Don’t feel like you have to limit yourself to fresh berries either. I always keep a bag of frozen ones in my freezer.
They’re flash-frozen right after picking, which locks in all the nutrients and sweetness. Same benefits, lower price tag—that’s what I call a win-win.
Now, if you want to branch out beyond the berry family, other fruits that make the cut include:
- Tart cherries are antioxidant superstars compared to their sweeter cousins. They even contain melatonin and tryptophan to help with sleep. (Who knew fruit could help you catch some Z’s?)
- Pomegranates, with their deep red arils, are loaded with anti-inflammatory compounds that benefit your heart. Yes, they’re challenging to open, but some things in life are worth the effort.
- Guava, acai berries, goji berries, and other exotic options also deserve honorable mentions for their impressive antioxidant profiles.
But if you want the most nutritional bang for your buck and don’t feel like hunting down exotic superfoods, just remember this simple rule: The deeper and more vibrant the color, the higher the antioxidant content.
So next time you’re in the produce section, maybe skip past those ho-hum apples and bananas and pick something with a bit more nutritional attitude.
P.S. Why your washed fruits and veggies might STILL be toxic.
