Word Secret” REVITALIZES Your Memory

There’s a saying that just bugs me to no end: you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.

You’re getting older, you know what you know, and you aren’t going to change.

That way of thinking is outdated… and, frankly, pretty harmful to your health.

But when it comes to caring for your memory, the mainstream has bought that philosophy hook, line, and sinker.

And they couldn’t be more wrong.

Not only can you STILL learn, researchers have discovered that this learning this  “word secret” in particular could REVITALIZE your memory.

A new study from the journal Aging Neuropsychology and Cognition found that studying a second language can be just what your aging brain needs to stay young.

You see, we’ve known for a long time that knowing a second language is brain-protective. People who know and speak a second language are much less likely to get dementia later in life.

But it wasn’t until now that researchers uncovered the benefits of learning a second language during your golden years.

The researchers at the Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care found that older adults who learned Spanish showed similar cognitive improvements when compared to another group who practiced a series of brain-training activities.

The study team took a group of seniors aged 65-75 and had them practice a language for 30 minutes a day. They used a language app called Duolingo – which is easy to use online or on your phone.

After four months, they compared the language learners to the group doing brain-training activities.

And the researchers found similar improvements in both working memory AND executive function (the ability to see and plan for the future) between the two groups.

The good news is you don’t have to be fluent. The group who learned a second language had brain improvement no matter how far they progressed in the app!

The language-learners also reported that they had more fun and many more of them stayed with the program than those in the brain-training activities group.

So, if you are looking for a serious cognitive boost for your mind, try a new language!

And it doesn’t have to mean paying for expensive classes or textbooks. The Duolingo language app used in the study is available to everyone, and it’s free. (You can sign up for it  .)

You can also strengthen your language skills by watching foreign films and practicing with your friends and family – and your brain will love you for it!
