Don’t Fall for This FAKE Alzheimer’s Treatment
Dear Living Well Daily Reader,
I have a feeling that people in the future will look back at us and cringe at the thought of some of our common medical practices.
Because even though these methods may not look barbaric now, time will tell. And like the way we look down on bloodletting or leeches, some practices could be viewed just the same.
I like to think medicine is always moving forward, but it has taken a HUGE step backwards for Alzheimer’s disease patients.
Researchers are now claiming that we can “zap away” Alzheimer’s with this bizarre treatment… but as usual, there’s more to the story.
*****
It’s hard to believe in this day and age we’re still talking about using radiation as a treatment therapy.
It’s used most often as a cancer treatment, and it often makes people sick and nauseous, or even leads to MORE cancer.
And now researchers are claiming it can heal Alzheimer’s disease.
In the study, researchers gave four advanced Alzheimer’s disease patients radiation treatments. There were three treatments, with two-week breaks in between.
Their plan was to see if the radiation could help dissolve harmful Alzheimer’s-causing plaques.
And at first glance, it worked. The patients’ behavior improved, and they seemed more like themselves.
But there are a few problems here.
Alzheimer’s disease increases with age, and is thought to be produced (in part) by oxidative damage.
Guess what else increases oxidative damage? Radiation.
And here’s another problem: the doctors used friends and family as “proof” that the treatment worked.
Anyone who’s been around Alzheimer’s patients knows that they have good days and bad days.
Plus, the more time and attention Alzheimer’s patients receive, the more they seem to respond. And part of the study treatment just so happened to involve more frequent visits.
This is another one of those crazy ideas that may get some traction, but I would highly advise against having anyone zap you or someone you love with radiation.
Instead, do your best to maintain a healthy weight, get frequent moderate exercise, and look into a supplement like bacopa or curcumin to protect your brain.
