Coffee DEFEATS Common Winter Condition (Wow!)
Dear Living Well Daily Reader,
Have you noticed that mainstream health gurus want to take away everything that makes you happy?
I’m not sure where this puritanical bent to health comes from. It’s like they assume that if you like something, then it MUST BE BAD for you.
And nothing gets a worse rap than coffee.
You’re told it disturbs your sleep… makes you more anxious… that it can even affect your blood pressure!
But the truth is, that morning cup of coffee may be just the ticket to beat back this all-too-common winter condition.
I’m talking about depression.
Yes – your cup of joe can really beat those “winter blues”!
Recently, a professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School published a review of coffee and the effects it has on depression.
His meta-analysis reviewed studies that covered 300,000 participants in total… and it had some pretty surprising conclusions.
In fact, he found that folks who drank roughly 13 ounces of coffee a day – about two to three cups of coffee – were far less likely to be depressed.
How much of a difference does coffee make? The coffee drinkers had a 32 percent lower risk of depression compared to those who didn’t drink coffee!
Why does it work?
Coffee contains caffeine, which stimulates the entire nervous system, including your brain. This has the effect of releasing dopamine (a neurotransmitter that makes you feel happy) in the brain.
But more importantly, coffee contains a high concentration of polyphenols, which are antioxidants that reduce inflammation. One theory on the cause of depression is low-level inflammation, which damages brain cells… but coffee can fight that!
The author of the meta-analysis thinks that coffee may also have a beneficial effect on our microbiome. In our digestive tracts, coffee interacts with those healthy microorganisms to create useful molecules that our brains love.
In other words, you have my permission to enjoy that warm cup of coffee without worrying that it’s going to harm you.
And in the end, you might just feel a little less sad this winter.
P.S. Did you know that coffee could help lower your risk of diabetes as well? Read all about it right here.
