MAILBAG: The DISTURBING Truth About Alzheimer's Drugs
“What’s your take on the drugs for Alzheimer’s?”
– Timothy, from Bel Air, MD
Hi Timothy,
Let me make it simple: They’re junk.
You’ve seen the breathless headlines, I’m sure. After all, they’re almost impossible to ignore!
They make exciting claims like “New breakthrough in Alzheimer’s Treatment Is a Game Changer!” or “FINALLY an Alzheimer’s drug offers patients real hope!”
Those clickbait articles all share the same problem. They’re almost always reacting to laboratory results and not HUMAN studies.
Research has shown these drugs might be helpful in mice or rats. But unfortunately, they couldn’t replicate those same exciting results in actual humans.
A few years ago, major drug companies announced that they were done trying to make a drug that works for Alzheimer’s. They had spent billions and had nothing to show for it, so they were out of the Alzheimer’s drug development game.
I thought that would be the end of the big promises. But the lure of billions more potential dollars in their bank accounts turned out to be too enticing to resist. The result is another recent wave of new drugs that they hope to say will “cure Alzheimer’s.”
But currently, there are NO drugs that make much of a difference.
For example, there’s a type of medication called cholinesterase inhibitors. They can only be used in early Alzheimer’s. And, in a best-case scenario, they’re only supposed to add a few months to a patient’s life.
Of course, your best bet is to take steps to reduce your risk of developing Alzheimer’s in the first place.
And if you or someone you love has the condition, treat it like brain diabetes and feed your brain the best brain-supporting nutrients available.
In a study published in the journal Nutrients, researchers found that eating a diet rich in vitamin E (found in sunflower seeds, almonds, spinach, avocados, squash, kiwifruit, trout, shrimp, and olive oil) and carotenoids (found in carrots, dark leafy greens, sweet potatoes, and tomatoes) goes a long way to keeping those brain cells intact as you age.
Studies show that curcumin helps to protect the brain. The omega-3 essential fatty acids in fish oil, support brain function and protect against oxidation. And CoQ10 is a powerful antioxidant and helps to provide energy to the brain.
P.S. Conventional medicine is making a HUGE mistake when addressing Alzheimer’s. Hint… it has something to do with FAT. I have all the details in my recent report here.
