Forget Fasting and Try THIS Instead
Thirty years ago, one of my hippie cousins gave me a jar filled with liquid and a mysterious white blob floating in it.
Puzzled, I asked them what it was. They called it a “kombucha tea starter.”
I was curious enough to give it a shot and make some of the tea. The process was more work than I expected, and I wasn’t at all sure about the strange-tasting fizzy beverage it produced.
I quickly abandoned the kombucha project, but in light of recent research on its incredible health benefits, I wonder if I made a BIG mistake.
Now, scientists say taking up a kombucha habit could be just what the doctor ordered if you find yourself struggling to shed a few pounds.
Fast forward to today, and kombucha is everywhere you look. You can’t walk into a grocery store without tripping over the stuff.
Now, I’ll admit kombucha can be an acquired taste. But if you’ve tried it and decided it’s not for you or rejected it because you thought you might not like it, you might want to give it a second chance.
Kombucha is bursting with beneficial bacteria. These probiotics have countless benefits, but I want to focus on weight control today.
That’s right, it could help you lose weight!
Researchers discovered that when the yeasts and bacteria from this fermented tea take up residence in your gut, they tweak your fat metabolism, eventually lowering your fat stores. And you don’t even have to change your diet!
The secret lies in that mysterious white blob floating in the jar my cousin gave me. It’s called a SCOBY, which stands for symbiotic cultures of bacteria and yeasts.
The SCOBY is packed with probiotic microbes, including Acetobacter, Lactobacillus, and Komagataeibacter. Researchers have linked these little guys to a host of health benefits, including lowering blood pressure.
But here’s where things get REALLY interesting.
Researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill discovered that kombucha’s microbes directly influence gene expression in the intestines.
The bacteria crank UP the proteins needed to break down fat while simultaneously turning DOWN the ones that help build triglycerides or fat compounds.
This means that kombucha could have some of the same benefits as fasting without actually denying yourself food.
The good news is that kombucha has come a long way since people first started making it at home decades ago. Some delicious versions are available with natural flavors such as citrus, ginger, mint, or tropical fruits added.
So, go ahead and give kombucha a try next time you’re feeling adventurous. If sipping this refreshing tea becomes a regular habit, you could effortlessly shed a few pounds.
