5 Fixes for Short-Term Memory Loss

Are you worried that your short-term memory isn’t quite what it used to be?

It’s a complaint I hear often.

Little slips, like losing your keys or not being able to recall what you had for breakfast, are enough to plant a seed of doubt.

But here’s the thing—you DON’T have to just sit back and accept a shoddy short-term memory. There are some pretty simple things you can do to give it a boost.

Try these five simple short-term-memory fixes to boost your brain power…

  • First, get moving! Exercise isn’t just good for your body; it’s great for your brain, too. Even a quick 20-minute walk can improve your memory and cognitive function. It’s like giving your brain a workout.
  • Next, make sure you’re getting enough ZZ’s. Sleep is crucial for memory consolidation, so if you stay up late and don’t get enough sleep, your short—and long-term memory will suffer. Aim for a solid seven to nine hours daily.
  • Try learning something new! Whether it’s picking up a new language, learning to play an instrument, or tackling a challenging hobby, engaging in novel activities can strengthen your memory muscles. It’s like cross-training for your brain.
  • Don’t underestimate the power of a healthy diet. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fatty fish, antioxidant-rich berries, and leafy green vegetables are all brain-boosting superfoods. Make sure to get enough B vitamins, too.
  • And finally, use it or lose it. Using it as often as possible is the best way to improve your short-term memory. Practice remembering things you would typically let go of. For example, when a character in a show you’re watching visits someone new, try remembering their name, apartment number, and the color of the car they are driving—anything you can hold onto to get your brain firing.

It’s time to take control of your short-term memory. With a little effort and simple lifestyle tweaks, you’ll remember names, dates, and where you left your sunglasses like a pro.
