[Alert] COVID-19 Raises Risk of Deadly Brain Disease By 17%?
Dear Living Well Daily Reader,
I don’t know about you, but if I see the words “social distance” one more time I’m going to scream.
I think we all have a little bit of fatigue from the length of COVID-19, and its ability to reach far into our lives.
And with the Delta variant spreading in some regions of the U.S., the weariness is growing.
To add to the troubles, you would think that once you had the disease you were done with it – but as we’re learning, COVID-19 has a way of sticking around long after your immune system has given it the boot.
And now, researchers may have found its most damaging effects yet.
A new study has uncovered that if you’ve suffered from COVID-19, you could have a 17 percent higher risk of these deadly brain diseases as well.
*****
I’m talking about neurological disorders.
Neurological disorders fall into two categories: psychiatric conditions like anxiety, depression, or brain fog, or conditions like headaches, dizziness, confusion, or tingling or numb extremities (fingers and toes).
In a recent study, University of Oxford researchers combed through health records of 236,379 COVID-19 patients infected last year and found that survivors were much more likely to have neurological disorders.
In fact, one-third of them were diagnosed with a neurological or psychiatric condition in the six months after being infected.
Their study found that 17 percent of the patients experienced anxiety and mood disorders, but more serious conditions happened as well, like stroke and dementia.
So, why is this happening?
Being inflicted with COVID-19 increases the risk of dying, and that can change anyone’s outlook on life. Combine that with difficulties exercising and meeting with friends and you have a proven recipe for anxiety and depression.
But there’s something else going on…
COVID-19 also increases inflammation throughout the body, which is ALWAYS harmful for the brain.
To make sure these findings were specific to COVID-19, researchers compared their findings to people who had the flu, and found that there was a 44 percent increased risk of neurological and mental health diagnoses after COVID-19 than after flu.
Your best bet—whether you have had COVID-19 or not— is to protect yourself and your brain.
One easy way to do so is to increase your intake of protein and good fats. Protein helps create your neurotransmitters (the connections that strengthen your brain). Good fats are found in foods like avocado and salmon and help restore your brain, which is almost 60 percent fat.
