Is Tofu GOOD for You? (The Truth REVEALED)
I often wonder why so many people are passionate about tofu.
There’s something about it that triggers strong emotions. Some folks HATE it, while others LOVE it.
But is it good for you?
Well, it’s complicated.
Tofu is a fermented soy product. It tastes bland alone. But it takes on the taste of whatever you combine it with.
While it’s been consumed for hundreds of years… there ARE concerns.
The first potential problem is that tofu contains phytoestrogens (plant estrogens). Now, in some cases, you might want more estrogen in your body. However, there are times when you definitely don’t.
But in the end, I don’t think the phytoestrogens are a significant issue for men or women.
Rather, there are two significant threats when eating too much soy:
- it can depress thyroid hormone
- many people are allergic
Soy contains lectins and phytates, which depress your thyroid gland and metabolism. This can lead to weight gain.
And an allergic reaction can cause you to pack on extra pounds too. Early in my practice, I had a patient who stopped eating soy and quickly shed 30 pounds!
It was water weight. Her body had been holding onto it to help dilute the “poison” she‘d been swallowing daily.
I haven’t seen anyone else THAT dramatically affected by soy since. But I do see a lot of folks who feel a whole lot better once they kick soy (including tofu) out of their diets.
If you’re not allergic to it, occasionally eating tofu likely isn’t a problem. But I would avoid eating it (and other soy-based products) daily.
P.S. The labels on those new-fangled meat substitutes claim the fake meats are better for your health and the environment. But nothing could be further from the truth…
