Mailbag! Superfood SLOWS Prostate Cancer

Dear Living Well Daily Reader,

You’ve got questions…

We’ve got answers!

Few things are as terrifying as prostate cancer.

And if you’re lucky enough to come out on the other side of it, there’s a good chance your health and sex life will never be the same.

Luckily, California researchers have just discovered that a certain superfood slows prostate cancer to a halt without any life-changing side effects.

Let’s dive in…

Natalie,

I keep hearing that eating walnuts can help you fight prostate cancer because they are high in omega-3 fatty acids. Couldn’t I just take an omega-3 supplement and get the same effect?

Thanks,

Walter H.

Great question, Walter.

The short answer is omega-3 supplements are not equal to walnuts when it comes to fighting prostate cancer.

Let me explain…

Scientists have long suspected that it’s the unique combination of nutrients found in walnuts that make it such a powerful cancer killer.

And according to a new study from the University of California, this is absolutely true.

In the study, researchers split mice with prostate cancer into three groups. One group got walnuts, one got walnut oil and the last group got a mixture of oils with the same omega-3 profile as walnuts.

At the end of the 18-week study, the scientists found that mice eating the walnuts and walnut oil had significantly slowed prostate cancer growth and lowered cholesterol levels. However, the mice in the omega-3 group saw neither improvement.

These results clearly confirm that omega-3s alone cannot fight prostate cancer as well as the combination of nutrients found in walnuts and walnut oil.

The scientists believe that walnuts are so good at slowing the growth of prostate cancer because they help balance the hormones and cholesterol that feed cancer growth.

Experts think that nutrients like zinc, magnesium, selenium and fiber play important roles in the anti-cancer effects of walnuts, too.

The mice in this study were eating the human equivalent of 2.6 ounces of walnuts a day, which you could easily add to salads, oatmeal or vegetable dishes. Or simply enjoy these tasty nuts as a daily snack.

And the best part? The only side effect that comes with walnuts is lowered cholesterol.
