Mailbag: The TRUTH About RSV In Adults
“Should I be worried about RSV? Doesn’t it only affect babies?”
– Gemma from Davenport, IA
Hi Gemma,RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) can affect people of ANY age.
We hear about it affecting children more than adults because the virus is more common and serious in babies and young children.
When a kid younger than a year old gets asthma or pneumonia, RSV is most often to blame.
But don’t be fooled. RSV can also infect adults.
The virus is spread through contact with respiratory droplets from an infected person. And it causes cold-like symptoms such as…
- cough,
- runny nose,
- fever, and
- sometimes wheezing.
RSV usually makes younger adults feel a bit under the weather, like they’re battling a cold. But in older adults or in folks with heart or lung problems, an infection can lead to more serious illnesses like pneumonia.
RSV season usually runs from fall through spring but can vary from year to year. But currently, RSV activity is higher than expected in many parts of the U.S.
Even though RSV affects more kids than adults, we should remain vigilant. Pay attention to reports of RSV activity in your area and call your doctor if your cold symptoms last longer than a week.
To reduce your risk of getting sick, wash your hands often and try not to touch your face. And if you spend some time in a crowded place (like an airport) or around someone with RSV, consider wearing a mask.
P.S. Miracle nutrient PROTECTS your lungs from infections.
