WEIRD Mushroom Clears Clogged Arteries!
Dear Living Well Daily Reader,
Chances are you’ll be firing up the grill this Fourth of July.
And when you’re picking up the burgers and hot dogs for tomorrow’s BBQ, there’s one other food you should get if you want to stay healthy.
Because researchers from Tufts University just discovered that a powerful mushroom could protect you from three of today’s top killers — weight gain, arterial disease and heart problems.
I’m talking about shiitake mushrooms.
And while it’s been known for years that these weird-looking fungi are tasty, scientists wanted to find out what they could do for your heart.
In this recent study, researchers split mice into three groups and fed them all the same diet – but one third of the mice also got portobello mushrooms and one-third got shiitake mushrooms.
At the end of the 16-week trial, researchers found that the mice in both mushroom groups had lower body weight gains than mice on the regular diet.
But the good news doesn’t end there…
After taking a closer look at the shiitake group, the researchers found that they had the lowest body weight of the three groups and had the least amount of blockages in their arteries. Meaning the shiitake mushrooms helped prevent arterial stiffness, one of the leading causes of heart disease.
Experts believe shiitake mushrooms are so heart-protective because they contain ergothioneine, a powerful antioxidant that stops inflammation and other processes that contribute to weight gain and arterial stiffness.
Shiitake mushroom are flavorful additions to your favorite Fourth of July kabobs, burgers or salads and are easily found at your local grocer.
Live well,
