MAILBAG: The Startling Truth About Sugar
“I’m diabetic and I don’t quite understand the differences in sugar. There’s sugar you make cookies with but also fruits have sugar. Can I have fruits even though they have sugar too?”
– Annette, from Helen, GA
Hi Annette,
For something that seems so simple, sugar sure gets complicated very quickly.
That table sugar you mentioned for making cookies is called sucrose. Sucrose is a sugar made up of half glucose and half fructose.
Glucose is the sugar your body runs on. And fructose is the sugar we all know as “fruit sugar.”
When measuring your blood sugar, you’re measuring the amount of glucose in your blood. That means your bloodstream could be full of fructose, and you wouldn’t know it, no matter how many times you tested.
Glucose is problematic, and high blood sugar can do damage to your body. But fructose is a hidden threat that’s even worse in many ways:
- Studies show that fructose can increase inflammation MORE than glucose.
- Fructose also gets converted into fat more easily than glucose
- Fructose can make your body’s cells less responsive to insulin (the hormone that helps control blood sugar).
You get fructose when you eat table sugar. It’s the sugar most often used in processed foods. And, of course, it’s found in fruits.
So, can you safely eat fruit sugar? I say absolutely NOT, even though very few nutritionists, doctors, or dieticians would agree with me.
It’s hard to kick sugar out of your life, but you CAN do it. It takes time, but it also gets easier the more you practice.
P.S. Are you a sugar addict? STOP sugar cravings in their tracks with THIS “sweet” discovery.
